Embracing The Vegan Lifestyle Helped Me Overcome Depression And Gave Me A Purpose.

Have you ever just felt helpless? Like you can’t bear what’s staring right at you, but you’re powerless to do anything about it?

That you know what’s about to happen, but, there is really nothing you can do?

I remember going for a trek in this village called Rajmachi. It was an outreach and a bunch of people from the NGO I was working with were with me then.

Barely breathing, her insides out, placenta hanging from her vagina, she just lay on the ground, struggling to breathe.

When you’re young you don’t really know how cruel the world and the people in it can be.

When you grow up, the world tends to try and break you and somewhere down the line you forget to just believe.

Imagine my surprise when our group came across a cow on the verge of death.

Barely breathing, her insides out, placenta hanging from her vagina, she just lay on the ground, struggling to breathe.

We called for a doctor. The doctor tried to somehow put her insides back in, and after much effort declared that there was nothing he could do.

She had to be put down.

We called for the farmer who laughed it off with, “Kya karna madam? Abhi maar jaegi woh.

(What’s the point, Ma’am? She’ll die now!)

On looking around we came across the calf she had given birth to.

The poor thing was exhausted and severely dehydrated.

While we were tending to her, the farmer came back demanding that the calf be given to him.

While I rushed to argue, he remained insolent. All of us had a fair idea of what was to happen to the calf.

We went to the police, registered a complaint for cruelty to animals, and left.

Something told me inside that I didn’t do all that I could have.

This completely changed everything.

I Have A Purpose

Depressed and lonely, I was tired of the world around me. I had no purpose, nothing to look up to.

It’s more about ‘Why’ than ‘How’. You just have to be more conscious about the things you want to eat.

By chance, I was introduced to the world of veganism.

I remember attending this seminar in our college that was held by the awe-inspiring Darshana Mazumdar.

Founder and Curator of the NGO I would come to work with eventually, that one session changed my life.

Yes, it was that very day.

I researched and figured out all the necessary things I would have to stop indulging in.

Almost everything changed. I shifted to soy milk, tofu, vegan cheese and a different diet altogether.

It’s been two years since I haven’t touched meat. If you think it’s hard, it’s not really.

It’s more about ‘Why’ than ‘How’. You just have to be more conscious about the things you want to eat.

Has that harmed my health? Not really. My body is perfect.

Very few people care about this, so someone has to make that choice to start.

And to be honest, I don’t look down on those who don’t share the same ideas like I do.

It’s been two years since I haven’t touched meat. If you think it’s hard, it’s not really.

My parents are non-vegetarians. Most of my friends are too.

In the end, it all comes down to choice. And whatever you decide, I’ll keep up my fight because that’s my choice.

Outreaches, seminars, awareness drives gave my life some direction. I was doing something that made a difference.

I mattered.

You’ve been starved, beaten, broken, and kept in a dark and dingy room.

Just Try and Imagine

I want to leave you with a thought.

Imagine you’re in a slaughterhouse.

You’ve been starved, beaten, broken, and kept in a dark and dingy room. That’s where you’ve been for the past month.

Every day one of your brothers and friends are taken away and they never return.

The shed you’re in lacks ventilation and it’s very difficult to breathe.

Blood all around.

You can smell death in the air.

You’ve resigned to your fate. Now you’re just waiting to see the end.

Could you imagine such a scenario?

You can't.
