Question Hour - Why Do I Feel so Lonely Even Though I Am Not Really Alone?

Question - Why do I feel so lonely even though I am not really alone?

Answer -

To begin with, it is important to understand the difference between loneliness and being alone.

Loneliness is the feeling of constant emptiness that you cannot leave behind. Loneliness stays and sticks to the point where it makes you recognize its existence.

It’s a state of mind.

Loneliness crops up at 3 A.M in the night when you’re exhausted and tired. It creeps over you when the party finally ends and everyone disperses.

You’ll know you’re lonely when you’re hit with constant thoughts of – Does anyone really care?

There is a pattern here. Loneliness strikes when the dust finally settles and you’re all alone.

It’s a sinking and toxic feeling that you cannot really ignore.

Remember that time when someone asked you something and you ignored their question because you thought they wouldn’t get it?

That’s where loneliness begins.

BEING ALONE

Being alone is a choice. You choose to be with yourself rather than with someone else.

You enjoy your own company.

Or maybe just want to take a day off and spend it on yourself.

As this article on Thought Catalog says, it’s a state of being.

Being alone is choosing to spend a day off on downloading illegal torrents and ordering some good food.

Sadly the art of being alone is losing its charm.

People are choosing to settle to not have to be lonely.

WHY DO I FEEL THE WAY I DO?

You feel the way you do because –

1) You don’t have many real friends who get you.

2) You have chosen to settle for people who will help curb this constant loneliness you feel inside.

3) You are engaging and actively propagating a fake persona online.

4) You are unable to communicate the things that matter to you and it’s finally getting to you.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Stop settling. This constant loneliness you feel isn’t going to go away anytime soon unless you connect or re-connect to the person who does get you.

Embrace who you are. If you’re weird – Be weird

Let the world go to hell with it.

Do things because you want to do it. Choose to be alone once in a while.
