Are We Really That Different?

I was just walking alone on the streets of Kolkata watching people pass by. Couples on motorbikes, children in school buses, students from the nearby University walking in groups, beggars sitting on the footpath hoping for some food.

But, what really caught my eye was their *faces*. The faces that had sparkling loving eyes. Happy faces going home on the back seat of the school bus enjoying the best time of their lives. Their faces were so carefree they could ignite thousands of souls.

A face which was not just begging for money but also a little trickle of kindness.

There were more people like me who were observing these faces and to them even I was a different face. A face so serene and emotionless yet carrying a hurricane within it.

Someone who had isolated herself and curled up in a big bubble of emptiness, loneliness and insecurities. The bubble was meant to protect her from the outer-world like a guardian angel. Surprisingly, it did. Sometimes.

The other times the bubble yearned to burst. This face wanted someone who could be the shield she wanted, replacing that bubble and protecting her from all uncertainties. But that is quite a frightening desire in today's world.

Also, that 'someone' didn’t exist. So, this is how life goes on for her and a million others like her who can survive because at the end of the day the fire inside them burns brighter than the fire around them. And it's THIS fire that keeps them going and tells them that it's perfectly fine to walk alone and not have a hand to hold on to.

It’s rather brave of them to fight their journey alone.

It’s rather brave of them to fight their journey alone. You could also say it’s a necessity. Because not every visitor you'll meet in your journey will decide to stay and walk along.
